CHARTER ACT OF 1793

Ans.

To add to the list of British Indian Acts in 18th century, came the Charters Act of 1793, which had surprisingly endowed British government and governor-generals special power to elect and carry out trade and commerce for another 20 yearsThough this legendary rule of law by Lord Cornwallis had its ill effects, like the zamindar class being empowered with total power, yet, the settlement act had its good sides.

The Mughal system of diwani was abolished and landowners in India were gifted with total control of their land. Even small landowners were not left unnoticed. An even system of revenue earning for the East India Company was established, as well as commercialisation. Company given monopoly of trade for 20 more years.Expenses and salaries of the Board of Control to be charged on Indian revenue.

The Governor General and the Governors could now over-ride the decisions of their respective Councils. All laws were to be translated in Indian languages. It laid the foundation of govt. by written laws, interpreted by courts.
